Step 1

To open the iPod, measure 6 centimeters (60 millimeters) up along the seam from the top of the iPod. This is the point at which you need to insert the flat head of the included non-scratching plastic tool and begin to pry open the case. Some force is required to insert the flat end into the crevice of the iPod's case. Work the flat end of the plastic tool back and forth against the seem to release the clips securing the case.

Step 2

Work the flat end of the plastic tool down the entire seem of the iPod case pushing the tool inward and moving it back and forth all the way around the iPod case until the silver portion is completely free from the white portion. The silver portion of the case will still be attached by a ribbon cable to the white portion of the case. Carefully place the silver portion to the side of the case using care not to damage the ribbon cable or the hard drive.

Step 3

Carefully lift the hard drive, which is surrounded by blue rubber, off of the mother board. Make sure that the blue rubber remains around the hard drive and that it is entirely removed from the mother board. Pay attention to the orientation of the hard drive for reassembly. At the base of the rubber, you will see a small ribbon connector that connects the hard drive to the mother board. Gently separate the connector and place the hard drive in a safe place for reassembly.
